Homeschool Tips

Ideas for Socializing Your Homeschooler

Ideas for Socializing Your Homeschooler
Many homeschoolers actively seek outside activities for their children to participate in. They want their little angels to have some experience socializing with…well, other little angels.

That’s a good idea.

As much as we’d like to keep our little koalas home with us forever, there is going to be some point in their lives when they will have to go out and face the world. Having a few social skills under their belts will make this a more pleasant transition.

Plus, there are many activities out there that are not only social, but educational as well. They can supplement your homeschool curriculum very nicely.

One word of caution – try to avoid getting your child involved in too many activities.  This can cause you and your kids to get exhausted and may lead to burnout.  I would look for activities that fit each of your child’s talents and interests and stick with those.  Bottom line…if your child enjoys it, keep doing it.  If she absolutely hates going to the activity, you probably want to consider dropping it.

Now the big question is…where do you find outside activities for socializing your homeschoolers? Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities out there. You just have to know where to look. Here are some thoughts on where you can seek them out.

Ideas for Socializing

Science Classes

Science museums and zoos often offer classes for homeschoolers.  They are usually very engaging and foster a love of science.

My kids really enjoyed a zoo class that they took one summer. They got a chance to pet a tarantula.  Not my animal of choice to cuddle, but my kids were fascinated by it. It was an experience that they talked about for weeks.

If you’d like to get your kids involved with a science museum or zoo, you can check out the websites of those nearest you or give them a call to see what they have to offer.

Music, Art, and Theater

Is your child musically gifted?  Then you may want to find a youth orchestra, band or choir for her to join up with. Some homeschool groups have bands and choirs also.

Does your child like art?  Art museums sometimes have classes or special tours available for youngsters.

Is your child dramatic?  Then you probably want to look into a theater group that offers classes for kids and teens.  If you ask around you can often find amateur groups that need kids or teens for a performance.  My kids have performed in a Passion Play and an Advent Play for a few years that we discovered through a friend.

Fitness

Besides traditional team sports offered by schools (they sometimes allow homeschoolers to participate), there are opportunities for kids to get involved in other activities which promote fitness.  Some of these include yoga, dance, swimming, sailing, and the martial arts.  Ask around, look in the phone book, or look online to see what is available in your area.

Youth Groups

Youth groups are a perfect way for kids and teens to bond and develop good relationships.  Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4H groups are often available nationwide.  Various religious organizations also have youth groups.  I would check to see what your church has to offer.

Homeschool Groups

We have enjoyed participating in a few homeschool groups over the years.  They often offer an assortment of play groups, enrichment classes, band and choir, and field trips for homeschoolers.  They are a great way to connect with other homeschoolers in your area. Ask around or look online for groups near you.

That’s it for my suggestions. Just remember…the internet, the phone book, the newspaper, and word-of-mouth are your best friends for finding socializing options around you.

What do YOU do to get your kids out and about with other kids? Let me know in the comment section.

Many blessings,
