Learning the geological periods is an adventure in both science and history for kids. They can find out about fossils, dinosaurs, rocks, various organisms, and the story of the Earth. It’s an exciting topic for children!

I have two mnemonics you can use that will help your children learn either the long list of geologic periods or the shorter list of major eras.

Here’s a list of the periods in the geologic time scale:

Cambrian
Ordovician

Devonian
Carboniferous
Permian
Triassic
Jurassic
Cretaceous
Paleocene
Eocene
Oligocene
Miocene
Pliocene
Pleistocene
Recent

This is a fun mnemonic to keep them straight:

Camels Often Sit Down Carefully. Perhaps, Their Joints Creak? Persistent, Early Oiling Might Prevent Painful Rheumatism.
