Mohs Mineral Hardness Scale Mnemonics

Rocks and minerals - Mohs Mineral Hardness Scale Mnemonics
If your kids or teens are learning about the Mohs mineral hardness scale, I have a couple of mnemonics you can use to help them remember the order of the minerals in the list.

These mnemonics are two fun phrases with words that begin with the same letters as the names of the minerals.

I hope they help with the memorization of this scale.




Mineral Hardness Scale Mnemonics

Here is the Mohs hardness scale with the minerals listed in order of softest (1) to hardest (10).




  1. Talc
  2. Gypsum
  3. Calcite
  4. Fluorite
  5. Apatite
  6. Orthoclase
  7. Quartz
  8. Topaz
  9. Corundum
  10. Diamond

Here are two mnemonic phrases that can help your child or teen remember them.

Tall Gyroscopes Can Fly Apart, Orbiting Quickly To Complete Disintegration

Terrible Giants Can Find Alligators Or Quaint Trolls Conveniently Digestible
