Brightest Stars Mnemonic

Tree and night sky - Brightest Stars Mnemonic
If you’re teaching your kids about the brightest stars in the night sky this summer, I have a mnemonic you can use to help them remember the names.

This memory trick was developed by Peter Hobbs and lists ten stars including our Sun.

This list also includes the location of each star. It should help you find them on a star chart.

Mnemonic for Learning the Brightest Stars

Here are the most brilliant stars in the night sky.

Son: “Sir Can Rig A VCR, Pa.”

Son/Sun (in our solar system)
Sirius (in Canis Major)
Canopus (in Carina)
Rigil Kent (in Centaurus)
Arcturus (in Bootes)
Vega (in Lyra)
Capella (in Auriga)
Rigel (in Orion)
Procyon (in Canis Minor)
Achernar (in Eridanus)

Know anyone else who is teaching their children about the brightest stars? Feel free to share this post with them.

Many blessings,
Susan
