Seven Deadly Sins Mnemonics

Angry man - Seven Deadly Sins Mnemonics
I have two memory tricks for you today for your religious life. They’re seven deadly sins mnemonics and they’ll help you and your family remember what kinds of sins to avoid.

If you aren’t familiar with them, the seven deadly sins are a list of vices to abstain from. They were first listed by Pope Gregory I in 590 A.D., however, their origin goes back even further as explained in this article: Where Did the 7 Deadly Sins Come From?

The sins in this list are pride, anger (or wrath), lust, avarice (or greed), envy, gluttony, and sloth. Here are the tricks for memorizing them.

Seven Deadly Sins Mnemonics

The first mnemonic I have is an acronym.

PALEGAS

Pride
Avarice
Lust
Envy
Gluttony
Anger
Sloth

The other mnemonic I have is based on Gilligan’s Island, the TV series from the 1960’s. I read a number of year’s ago that the seven castaways may have been based on the seven deadly sins. When I took a moment to think about it, I realized that this was true. Here’s a list of the characters with their respective vices.

Gilligan – Gluttony
Skipper – Anger
Thurston Howell III – Greed
Mrs. Howell – Sloth
Ginger – Lust
Professor – Pride
Mary Ann – Envy

Now you’ll never think of that show the same way again. 😉

Know anyone else who could use these seven deadly sins mnemonics? Feel free to share this post with them.

Many blessings,
Susan
