Subtraction Mnemonics

Girl doing subtraction problem on chalkboard - Subtraction Mnemonics
If your child is struggling with math facts terminology or doesn’t remember when to borrow, I have a few subtraction mnemonics that can help her out.

These mnemonics are short phrases and rhymes that can help make these concepts stick in your child’s brain.

Let’s take a look at them.

Subtraction Mnemonics

Difference

Does your child struggle to remember that the answer in subtraction is called the “difference?”

Here’s a little rhyme by Donnalyn Yates M.Ed. that you can use.

Difference, difference
What can it be?
The subtraction answer
Don’t you see?

Subtraction with Borrowing

Children sometimes get confused when it comes to borrowing in subtraction. They don’t always remember when they SHOULD borrow and when they shouldn’t.

If your child is like this, tell him to remember the four B’s:

Bigger Bottom? Better Borrow!

OR this little ditty can help.

More on the floor? Go next door and get 10 more.
More on top? no need to stop!

That’s it for the subtraction mnemonics that I have for you today. If you know of any, feel free to share them in the comment section.

Many blessings,
Susan
