Simple Drawing Activities to Do with Your Preschooler

When you’re sitting in a restaurant or waiting in a doctor’s office and you find your preschooler is getting antsy, you might want to try doing some drawing activities with her to keep her occupied.

Drawing is a fun activity that helps develop hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and fine motor skills. It also prepares young children for writing.

There are some very simple drawing activities that you can do with your preschooler either in the home or on the go. They require only paper and pencil. I have listed them below so you can try them out with your child.

Drawing Activities

1. Let your child scribble on paper.
2. Draw a pattern and have your child continue it.
3. Draw a simple picture for your child to copy.
4. Draw shapes and have your child copy them.
5. Demonstrate different types of lines such as straight lines, wavy lines, zig zags, and swirls. Have your child imitate them.




6. Play the Dot and Boxes game with your child.
7. Draw the outline of a simple animal such as a snake, worm, or fish and have your child draw patterns inside of it.
8. Create a dot-to-dot of a simple or abstract shape for your child, then let him connect the dots.
9. Look for patterns around you on fabric, dishes, or other items. Let your child try to draw them on paper.
10. Have your child draw a simple object in your house. (Or maybe a sleeping pet.)
11. Demonstrate for your child how you can draw a simple house with squares, rectangles and triangles. Let him imitate you.
12. Draw simple letters and numbers for him to imitate.
13. Draw heads and have your child draw faces showing different expressions. You may need to model this for him.
14. Create a made-up animal with your child. Talk about the features it has and draw it together.
15. Have your child finish a picture that you begin to draw.
16. Let your child draw a picture of himself using a hand mirror.
