Moon Mnemonics

Phases of the Moon - Moon Mnemonics
I have some moon mnemonics for you today that can help kids or teens learn about the Earth’s Moon, the moons of Saturn, and the largest moons of Jupiter.

These mnemonics come in the form of acronyms and fun phrases. They cover phases of the moon, terminology, astronauts, and names of moons.

Hopefully, they will make it easier for your kids to memorize information about the moons in our solar system.

Moon Mnemonics

Let’s start with the Earth’s Moon.

Phases of the Moon

The word DOC can help children learn the phases of the moon.

D looks like the First Quarter Moon which is lit up on the right side.
O is a Full Moon.
C has an arch on the left representing the Last Quarter Moon when it is illuminated.

Waxing and Waning

Do you kids confuse the terms waxing and waning? Tell them this phrase:

Stop waning, you’re losing.

It will remind them that the waning phases are losing light.

First Men the Moon

If you kids know their ABC‘s, they can remember the names of the first men to land on the Moon:

Neil Armstrong
Buzz Aldrin
Michael Collins

Now let’s look at the moons of other planets.

Moons of Saturn

The moons of Saturn can be learned with this funny phrase:

MET DR THIP

Mimas
Enceladus
Tethys
Dione
Rhea
Titan
Hyperion
Iapetus
Phoebe

Moons of Jupiter

The largest moons of Jupiter in order of their distance from the planet are:

Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto

And this sentence can help children remember them:

I Eat Grandma’s Cookies

That’s it for the moon mnemonics. If you know anyone else who would like to teach them to their kids, feel free to share this post with them.

Many blessings,
Susan
