I have a few mnemonics that will make that job a bit easier. They cover numerals 1 to 1000 so your kids will be able to help you read the copyright dates in old books.
Here they are.
Learn Roman Numerals
If you want your children to focus on learning only 1, 5 and 10, this little phrase can help them.
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
I View X-rays.
And when they are ready to learn the bigger numbers, use this phrase.
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

On the other hand, if you want them to learn all the numerals 1 to 1000, use this fun sentence.
I = 1
