Día de los Muertos (pronounced DEE-ah day lohs Mware-tohs) is coming up this weekend.
If you aren’t familiar with this holiday, it’s basically the Mexican equivalent of our Memorial Day. It translates to Day of the Dead and corresponds with All Souls Day.
Unlike Halloween in this country, Día de los Muertos is religious in nature. It’s a time to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away.

When my kids were young, we preferred to spend more time celebrating Day of the Dead than Halloween because it’s somewhat spiritual and I was teaching my kids the Spanish language and culture. We made sugar skulls and read two children’s books about the holiday, El Día de los Muertos and Day of the Dead. (paid links)
If you’d like to teach your kids about this Mexican holiday, I have a free Día de los Muertos coloring page for you. It’s a sugar skull decorated with a cross, flowers, and other designs. I hope you like it!
If you’d like MORE Day of the Dead coloring pages and crafts, I have a Día de los Muertos Crafts and Coloring Pages product you may be interested in. It has puppets, masks, table decorations, and more! Plus there’s a page where your kids can decorate their own sugar skull the way they like. It’s lots of fun!
Anyway, here’s the free coloring page for you. I hope you have a wonderful Día de los Muertos!
