I’m a big believer in using a phonics program to teach reading.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that every child in the world needs it. I have read about some homeschooled children who have learned to read without any program, but this is rare. Usually, a good phonics program is a wise choice for anyone teaching a child to read.

I used phonics programs with my kids. My oldest loved the Catholic Little Angel Readers. She was reading when she was 4. My youngest preferred doing Hooked on Phonics independently at the age of 5. It worked so well that she was reading The Lord of the Rings when she was 7. (She snuck that book from my mother’s bookshelf after I read her The Hobbit, but that’s another story.)
While I prefer purchased phonics programs, I understand that that may not be in everyone’s budget. For that reason, I thought I’d share some free phonics readers with you. Some of these are online programs that you can access on your PC while others can be printed using your handy dandy, overworked, underappreciated printer (I know. I have one.) and gobs of black ink (They just don’t make print cartridges big enough!).
