Books of the Bible Mnemonics

Bible on a table - Books of the Bible Mnemonics
Today I have some books of the Bible mnemonics that will help your kids learn the books of the Old Testament and the Gospels.

These mnemonics come in the form of three classic rhymes, some of which you may already know. Feel free to print them and hang them in your homeschool room to reference. Just click the button at the top and bottom of this post to get an ad-free PDF version sent to your inbox.

Now, here are those rhymes.

Books of the Bible Mnemonics

Old Testament

Let’s start with the Old Testament.

Here’s a rhyme that has 39 books from the OT.

(I’m sorry, but I’m afraid it’s missing some of the books that are in the Catholic Bible. 🙁 )

Books of the Old Testament

The great Jehovah speaks to us
In Genesis and Exodus;
Leviticus and Numbers see,
Followed by Deuteronomy.

Joshuah and Judges sweep the land,
Ruth gleans a sheaf with trembling hand;
Samuel (x2) and numerous Kings (x2) appear,
Whose Chronicles (x2) we wondering hear.

Ezra and Nehemiah now,
Esther the beauteous mourner show,
Job speak in sighs, David in Psalms,
The Proverbs teach to scatter alms.

Ecclesiastes then comes on,
And the sweet Song of Solomon.
Isiah, Jeremiah then
With Lamentations takes his pen.

Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea’s lyres,
Swell Joel, Amos, Obadiah’s.
Next Jonah, Micah, Nahum come,
And lofty Habbakuk finds room.

While Zephaniah, Haggai calls,
Rapt Zechariah builds his walls,
And Malachi, with garments rent,
Concludes the ancient testament.

Gospels

Now here are two versions of a rhyme you might be familiar with that teach the four Gospels.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Went to bed with their trousers on.

* * *

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on.
Four corners to my bed,
Four angels round my head;
One to watch and one to pray
And two to bear my soul away.

That’s it for books of the Bible mnemonics. If I find any others at a later date I will add them in.

Do you know any other memory tricks for books of the Bible? Feel free to share them.

Many blessings,
Susan
