Did Dad pop the rotor on the car for Mom by noon?
How many palindromes can you find in that sentence?
In case you were wondering, a palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same forward and backward like “kayak.”
Palindromes are fun to share with children. They are a good way to demonstrate the interesting patterns that show up in our language.
Below is a list of some common and uncommon palindrome words. Some I’m sure you’ll recognize while others may have you going to dictionary.com to find out what they mean. Or rather, they’ll have your KIDS going to that website to learn what they mean. 😉
There are a number of activities that your children can do using this list of palindromes. Some of them include:
- Write a story using as many palindromes as you can.
- Make a palindrome word search, word scramble, or other puzzle.
- Write sentences using the palindromes and draw pictures to go with them.
- Write a song or chant using as many palindromes as you can.
- Draw pictures of some of the palindromes and label them.
- Write a poem using as many palindromes as you can.
- Write a joke or riddle about a palindrome.
- Make a palindrome tongue twister.
- Make up your own palindrome words for fun.
- Have a palindrome scavenger hunt.
- Make a palindrome book with illustrations.
- Categorize the palindromes by word type, i.e. noun, verb, etc.
I’m sure there are other activities you could do as well, but I thought I’d get your noodles stirring with ideas, then let you take off on your own.
Now, enough about noodles. They aren’t palindromes anyways. Let’s get on with the list.
