The Wednesday of Holy Week used to be called Spy Wednesday. That’s because it is the day that Judas Iscariot (the spy) was paid 30 silver pieces to betray Jesus to the chief priests. (Matthew 26:14-16)
The betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus were horrible events in that time in history. But, as the poem today suggests, God can bring good from evil. Jesus was resurrected 3 days after his death on the cross. He opened up the gates of Heaven for us. Those are the good things that came from the crucifixion.
God can also bring good from the evil in our lives. When bad things happen, we need only seek His help and consolation and He’ll be there for us. God can overcome evil and bring back the good. We need only ask Him.
The title of the poem for today is “Good from Evil” and it was written by John Sterling, a Scottish poet and clergyman of the 19th century.
I hope it inspires you to seek God in times of evil so that He may bring the good back to your life.
Good from Evil
By John Sterling
Thou God, so rulest; such the plan
Of endless change, evolving good.
Thou leadest thus desponding man
With hope on all thy works to brood.
In all to see an endless will
For all educing light and life,
The blessings born from seeming ill
And peace the end assured of strife.
So thou in me, O God! ordain
That quiet faith and gladness pure
O’er all convulsions past may reign,
And root my soul in Thee secure.
So haggard wrecks of former woe
Beneath thy radiant light may shine,
And charmed to steadfast being show
O’er all their havoc bliss divine!
