The 6th Day of Christmas Book – The Donkey’s Dream

The Donkey's Dream
The 6th day of Christmas book is about a dream…a very sweet dream that a donkey has while carrying a lady upon his back. The lady, I’m sure you can guess, is Mary. The name of the book is The Donkey’s Dream, written and illustrated by Barbara Helen Berger.

This adorable story about the Nativity is full of lovely imagery for Mary. The donkey dreams about carrying different symbols for the mother of Jesus on his back. A city is one of them because Mary is sometimes referred to as a City of God in the Psalms and the Book of Revelations.

The illustrations for these books are absolutely precious. I love the blues that Berger uses, especially on Mary’s dress. They are the same color as the sky which ties in with one of the metaphors for Mary.

Berger decorates many of the pages with beautiful blue forget-me-nots. There is a German legend associated with this flower. In it, God named all of the plants and flowers except this little one. The flower cried out, “Forget me not, O Lord!” The Lord replied, “That shall be your name.” Interestingly enough, after the author/illustrator had finished the paintings for this book, she discovered that the French name for these flowers is tied to Mary. I won’t tell you how, though. You’ll have to find out for yourself by reading the Author’s Note in the back of the book. 😉

Many blessings,
