May 1st is Mother Goose Day! It’s a good time to cuddle up with your little honey bunnies and share some classic nursery rhymes by that talented lady. Actually, that lady’s name should be “Anonymous” because the Mother Goose rhymes were written by a collection of unknown men and women over a period of many years. These simple verses were passed down from one generation to the next and came to be known by tradition as “Mother Goose Rhymes.” In the Mother Goose books which we find today, we come to know characters like “Little Boy Blue” and “Little Bo Peep.” But I had to ask myself, “Are there other characters and rhymes that aren’t so commonly known?” I decided to go on a hunt to find out and was pleasantly surprised to find that there are quite a large number of rhymes that go back a century or more. April is Poetry Month and April 22nd is Earth Day. I don’t know about you, but I like to combine things whenever it is convenient as a time saver. Sometimes it can work out quite well to do two or more different subjects together with one lesson.
