Ways that You Can Save Money on Homeschool Curriculum
Get freebies on the internet. There are plenty of free resources on the internet that can be used to make or supplement your curriculum. They include informational articles, videos, music, online educational games, online courses, and more.
Use the library. Borrowing books from the library is a great way to save money. Just remember to put a reminder for due dates somewhere so that you don’t have any late fees.
Borrow from friends. Do you have friends who homeschool? Sometimes you can borrow books that they are finished using. Just be sure to make a list of items you have borrowed and who you borrowed them from or else you won’t remember when it comes time to return the items.
Pass things down from sibling to sibling. You can save money by purchasing books that can be used over and over again rather than consumables that have to be thrown out once they are written in. While this may not always work for every child and every subject, doing it when you can will help out.
Get teacher discounts. Some businesses like bookstores will give homeschoolers a teacher discount. The next time you go shopping, ask to see if you qualify.
Watch for homeschool specific discounts. Some places like zoos and museums will have a homeschool day and drop the price of admission for homeschoolers.
Get a tax exempt number. Some states will allow you to get a tax exempt number just like a public school has. It allows you to purchase educational products for your homeschool without paying sales tax. Check your state to see if you qualify.
Look for tax credits. Some states like Minnesota will give you a tax credit for certain types of educational expenses if you homeschool. Check your state to see what options are available.
Buy used books or older editions online. Sites like Craigslist and ebay have used books that you can buy for a great price.
Check out garage sales and library sales. You can purchase children’s books and reference books at amazing prices at garage sales, and libraries often sell used books for reasonable prices.
Visit used bookstores and thrift shops. These types of stores will not only have good children’s books, but sometimes used curriculum too.
Sell your old curriculum. Get money for books you no longer need by selling them to other homeschoolers or used bookstores.
Participate in homeschool curriculum swaps. These are great events for purchasing curriculum at reduced prices.
Hit the back-to-school sales. July and August are the best times to get supplies like pencils, crayons, and paper at great prices.
Go to homeschool conventions. Some publishers offer special discounts at conventions.
Take advantage of Amazon Prime. With Amazon Prime Membership, you can get access to videos, music, free two-day shipping, the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library, and more!
