In 1918, Raggedy Ann was introduced to the world through the artistic talents of cartoonist Johnny Gruelle. She brought joy to many a child in the early 1900’s.
Two years later, Gruelle introduced Raggedy Ann’s brother, Raggedy Andy. The two of them had many an adventure which have entertained boys and girls for nearly a century.
My daughters were among those children who enjoyed these stories and so was I for that matter. I have fond memories of reading some Raggedy Ann and Andy stories in my youth. I even had a homemade Raggedy Ann doll which I loved.
Recently, I thought how wonderful it would be to bring back some of the art and stories of Raggedy Ann and Andy in new ways, specifically ways that teach children. Puzzles, I thought, are one way to do that because they help children develop cognitive abilities.
So I created Raggedy Ann Simple Puzzles and Raggedy Ann Number Puzzles. They not only help children develop hand-eye coordination and visual spatial awareness, but, in the case of the latter, they help children learn number order and skip counting.
Then I decided it was time to include Raggedy Ann’s brother. So I made Raggedy Andy Simple Puzzles and Raggedy Andy Number Puzzles. They similarly help children develop thinking skills.
